Max Tokens

The upper limit you set on how long the AI's response can be.

Definition

Max tokens is a parameter you can set when using an AI API that caps the length of the generated response. This is useful for controlling costs, ensuring responses fit a particular format (like a short summary), or preventing the model from rambling. If a model hits the max token limit mid-sentence, the response will be cut off, so setting an appropriate limit for the task is important.
