1. Purpose and Scope
Coaley Peak Limited recognises that its activities have an environmental impact and is committed to managing that impact responsibly. This policy sets out our approach to environmental stewardship and sustainability, and applies to all employees, contractors, and third parties acting on our behalf.
We aim to conduct our operations in a manner that minimises harm to the environment, supports the transition to a low-carbon economy, and meets or exceeds our obligations under applicable environmental legislation.
2. Legal and Regulatory Framework
This policy has regard to the following legislation and guidance, among other applicable requirements:
- Environment Act 2021 — We acknowledge the legally binding targets introduced by the Environment Act 2021 in respect of air quality, biodiversity, water, and resource efficiency, and aim to support these objectives where our operations are relevant.
- Climate Change Act 2008 (as amended) — The UK’s legally binding commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 informs our long-term planning and carbon management approach.
- Procurement Policy Note 06/21 (PPN 06/21) — Where we supply services to central government contracting authorities, we acknowledge the requirement to produce and maintain a Carbon Reduction Plan in accordance with PPN 06/21, and we are committed to meeting this obligation where applicable.
3. Our Environmental Commitments
Coaley Peak Limited is committed to the following principles, which guide our day-to-day operations and longer-term planning:
- Reducing carbon emissions — We aim to measure, understand, and progressively reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with our operations, working towards alignment with the UK’s net zero 2050 target.
- Sustainable procurement — Where practicable, we seek to procure goods and services from suppliers who demonstrate a credible commitment to environmental responsibility.
- Waste reduction — We aim to minimise waste at source and, where waste is unavoidable, to reuse or recycle materials in preference to disposal.
- Energy efficiency — We aim to use energy efficiently across all aspects of our operations and, where practicable, to prefer low-carbon or renewable energy sources.
- Continuous improvement — We commit to reviewing our environmental performance regularly and seeking opportunities for meaningful improvement over time.
4. Carbon Reduction Plan
Coaley Peak Limited has adopted a Carbon Reduction Plan consistent with the requirements of PPN 06/21 for public sector supply chains. Our plan sets out our commitment to achieving net zero by 2050 at the latest, in line with the UK Government’s legislated target under the Climate Change Act 2008.
Our Carbon Reduction Plan covers the greenhouse gas emissions arising from our operations, including those categorised under the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol as Scope 1, Scope 2, and relevant Scope 3 emissions. We aim to:
- Establish and maintain a measurable baseline of our carbon footprint;
- Set interim reduction targets and review progress against those targets periodically;
- Identify and implement feasible reduction measures across our operations; and
- Report on our progress in a transparent and consistent manner.
We do not make unqualified claims regarding specific carbon figures or guaranteed savings. Our reported emissions data and reduction progress are subject to the methodologies and data quality available to us at the time of reporting, and will be refined as our measurement capability matures.
5. Scope 1, 2, and 3 Emissions
We recognise that a comprehensive approach to carbon management requires awareness of all material emission sources:
- Scope 1 — Direct emissions: Emissions from sources owned or directly controlled by Coaley Peak Limited, such as combustion of fuel in company-owned equipment or vehicles, where applicable.
- Scope 2 — Indirect energy emissions: Emissions associated with the generation of purchased electricity, heat, or cooling consumed by our operations.
- Scope 3 — Value chain emissions: Indirect emissions occurring in our supply chain and from the activities of our customers and contractors, including business travel, purchased goods and services, and downstream use of our outputs. Scope 3 emissions typically represent the most significant proportion of a professional services organisation’s carbon footprint; we aim to improve our understanding and management of relevant Scope 3 categories over time.
6. Sustainable Procurement
We recognise that our purchasing decisions influence environmental outcomes beyond our direct operations. Where practicable and consistent with value for money and quality requirements, we give preference to suppliers and contractors who:
- Have adopted a documented environmental or sustainability policy;
- Can demonstrate credible commitments to reducing their own carbon footprint;
- Use materials, products, or processes with lower environmental impact; and
- Support responsible disposal, recycling, or end-of-life management of goods and materials.
Suppliers engaged on public sector contracts may be required to provide evidence of their environmental commitments, including a Carbon Reduction Plan where mandated by the relevant contracting authority.
7. Business Travel
Business travel is a material source of carbon emissions for many professional services organisations. We aim to minimise unnecessary travel by applying the following principles:
- Virtual meetings first — Where a meeting can be conducted effectively by video or telephone, this is the preferred approach. In-person attendance should be justified by a clear business need.
- Rail over air — Where travel is required within Great Britain, rail is strongly preferred over domestic flights.
- Journey consolidation — Where multiple meetings or site visits are required in the same area, we aim to consolidate travel where feasible.
- Low-emission vehicles — Where road travel is necessary, we encourage the use of low-emission or electric vehicles where practicable.
These preferences do not prevent travel where it is genuinely necessary; they reflect our commitment to considering environmental impact as a factor in travel decisions.
8. Waste and Recycling
We aim to minimise waste across our operations in line with the waste hierarchy: reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, and dispose. In practice, this means:
- Preferring digital over paper processes where feasible;
- Using recycled or sustainably sourced materials where available;
- Ensuring appropriate recycling facilities are used for paper, electronics, and other recyclable materials; and
- Disposing of waste, including electronic and hazardous waste, in accordance with applicable legislation.
9. Reporting and Measurement
We aim to measure and report on our environmental performance in a consistent and transparent manner. This includes, where practicable:
- Annual reporting of our greenhouse gas emissions against our Carbon Reduction Plan baseline and targets;
- Tracking of key environmental metrics relevant to our operations; and
- Publication of our Carbon Reduction Plan in accordance with PPN 06/21 requirements.
Our reporting methodology is informed by the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard and HM Government guidance on measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. We acknowledge that our measurement capabilities will develop over time and commit to improving the accuracy and scope of our reporting accordingly.
10. Responsibilities
Responsibility for environmental and sustainability matters is held at senior management level. In practice:
- Senior management is responsible for approving this policy, setting targets, allocating resource, and ensuring the organisation meets its environmental obligations.
- All employees and contractors are expected to be aware of this policy, act in accordance with its principles, and raise any environmental concerns promptly.
- Managers and project leads are responsible for embedding environmental considerations into their areas of work, including procurement decisions and travel planning.
Queries regarding this policy or our environmental commitments may be directed to compliance@coaleypeak.co.uk.
11. Review and Improvement
This policy is reviewed at least annually and updated as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, regulatory guidance, our organisational circumstances, or developments in environmental best practice. We are committed to the ongoing improvement of our environmental performance and to engaging constructively with clients, suppliers, and stakeholders on sustainability matters.
