Hybrid Search

Combining keyword search and semantic search for more accurate retrieval.

Definition

Neither keyword search nor semantic search is perfect on its own. Keyword search misses relevant results that use different vocabulary; semantic search can sometimes return results that are thematically related but don't contain the specific terms needed. Hybrid search combines both approaches, using a weighting to blend keyword and semantic results. Most production RAG systems use hybrid search because it produces more reliable, higher-quality retrieval than either approach alone.
